Cushing Man's Class Idea Becomes Reality

August 1992

Gene Maitlen talked about a dredge operator school when he first opened the VMI Cushing dredge manufacturing plant in the fall of 1989.

At that time he commented how difficult it was to get dredge operators because there was no place to train them, except by people in his plant which markets dredges nationally and internationally.

A first for the nation may be the result of a unique partnership with his firm, Central Area Vo-Tech at Drumright and the City of Cushing, Maitlen's idea has come to pass.

"I'm not aware of any other schools to teach dredge operations," he said in an earlier interview, at that time remarking on the big pay operators can ask..

The first 40-hour program of a Mini-Dredge operator training school will open at the Cushing City Lake on Sept. 21, 1992 and continue through September 25th.

Maitlen's VMI Inc. will supply the machines and instructors in a program that will teach Central Vo-Tech students about safety, dredging hydraulics, maintenance, troubleshooting, operation and mobilization and demolition.

"Because of the Clean Water Act which has passed by Congress and with the public's concern for cleaning up the environment, the prospects for our kind of equipment has increased dramatically," Maitlen said.

Dredges will be used for cleaning our sewage lagoons, and also cleaning up hazardous waste and spills, he predicts.

"Our equipment is also ideal for cleaning out contaminated ponds, to accommodate wildlife," Maitlen said.

Approval to use the City Lake for classes was given by the Cushing City Commission.

This "on water" training will give the students practical, hands-on operating experiences, said Jim Potter, director of business and industry services for Vo-Tech.

"We think there is job creation potential in this project and are pleased that the three-way partnership can bring this to reality," he added.

At the time of the first interview and trip through his plant located in of of Cushing's Industrial Parks, he commented on the need for dredge operators.

"But there aren't any schools as such and so we have formed this partnership with Central Area Vo-Tech in Drumright and the city of Cushing," he said.

It appears to be an everyone win situation, the city will get some of the silt out of the lake; men will learn how to operate the equipment and Vo-Tech will have another successful school.

"And this just could be the nation's first school," Maitlen said.

The class will be limited to eight students with a $300 tuition payable to Central Vo-Tech.  Those who enroll in both classes, this and a Hazardous Waste Operating School, wil get a $50 discount in the tuition.

The Hazardous Waste or (Hazwoper) course will begin September 28 thru October 1, 1992 for an additional 40 hours of training.  This course is for participants who need certification to work in hazardous waste sites.

Why VMI Dredges Stands Behind Honest, Reliable Specs

Why VMI Dredges Stands Behind Honest, Reliable Specs

VMI Dredges Logo

When it comes to dredging equipment, performance is everything. At VMI Dredges, we believe transparency is just as important as efficiency. That’s why we’re committed to providing honest, accurate specifications for all our dredges—no exaggerations, no overinflation, just real-world numbers you can rely on.

Straight Talk About Performance

In an industry where some manufacturers inflate specs to make their equipment look better on paper, VMI Dredges takes a different approach. We don’t believe in overpromising and underdelivering. Instead, every specification we provide is rigorously tested and proven in real-world applications.

Flow Rates You Can Count On

Whether it’s 1,500 gallons per minute (GPM) with our smaller models or over 3,000 GPM with larger machines, our pumping capacities reflect what you can expect in actual operation—not idealized lab conditions.

Digging Depths That Deliver

When we say our dredges can reach depths of 20 feet, we mean it. With optional extension kits available, we offer precise solutions for deeper applications without cutting corners.

Designed for Real-World Applications

We understand that dredging isn’t done in a controlled environment. From fluctuating material density to varying water levels, every project comes with unique challenges. That’s why VMI Dredges tests all equipment in the toughest conditions to ensure our specs hold up under pressure.

Recessed Impeller Pumps

Our hi-chrome cast iron pumps are built to handle thick slurries and large solids without compromising on flow rate. You can trust our specs because they reflect how the pump will actually perform on your site.

Reliable Cutterhead Torque

Torque ratings on our full-width flow-through cutterheads are not just theoretical. They’re field-proven to deliver consistent power in dense, compacted materials.

Why Accuracy Matters

Inflated specs might look good on paper, but they can lead to costly inefficiencies and unmet expectations in the field. With VMI Dredges, you know exactly what you’re getting—no guesswork, no surprises. That means you can plan your projects with confidence and avoid unnecessary downtime or adjustments.

Our Commitment to Integrity

For over 50 years, VMI Dredges has built a reputation for honesty and reliability. Here’s what sets us apart:

Transparent Testing: All performance data is backed by real-world testing.

Customer Trust: Our clients return to us because they know they’re getting equipment that performs as promised.

Industry Expertise: We don’t need to exaggerate—our equipment speaks for itself.

Choose Dredging Equipment You Can Rely On

At VMI Dredges, we don’t just sell dredging equipment—we sell peace of mind. When you choose a VMI dredge, you’re choosing a partner that values your success as much as you do. You’ll always get honest specs, reliable performance, and a team that’s here to support you every step of the way.

Ready to learn more? Contact us today to discuss your project needs and see why VMI Dredges is the trusted choice for dredging professionals around the globe.

Way Back When Article, Cushing Daily Citizen, Tuesday, June 6, 2000 - VMI Eyes Joint Venture with Chinese Company

VMI Eyes Joint Venture with Chinese Company

By Karen Geyer, CDC Staff Writer
Cushing Daily Citizen
Tuesday, June 6, 2000

A distinguished group of executives from China and New York City visited Cushing’s VMI, Inc. last week.  They are looking to enter into a joint venture with the U.S. companies to establish industry in a tax free zone called Putong.

Frank T.H. Yuan is President of USA-China Entrepreneur Associates, Inc. and is president or general manager of three other companies, having to do with international marketing.  “We have the potential for great opportunities and joint ventures that will benefit both countries,” he said.

Wang Li Yong is the General Manager of the Shanghai Huzhou Shipping Engineering Company.  He has his Assistant Manager and Accountant Han Xiu Ping with him, as well as Hu Lai You, his Sales Manager.  Although language was a barrier, Henry Chen, a broker from New York City served as an excellent interpreter.  Wu Yu Xiang, Hudong Heavy Machinery Co, Ltd, Director of Assembly also from Shanghai, completed the group, except for another member of their party who was not feeling well, Shen Ji Qing.

VMI, Inc. is a family business that manufactures dredges.  Dredges are large boat-like machines used in cleaning out rivers and deltas.  VMI, Inc. is led by President Randy Maitlen, Vice President Tony Maitlen, and Chairman of the Board Gene Maitlen.  It began in Oklahoma City in 1972 and moved to Cushing in 1989.

“My sons and I came up with the design.  We’ve sold to countries around the world.  Just to name a few, Pakistan, Africa, Philippines, South American, Canada and Mexico.  We rent a lot of equipment, too, especially to places like Louisiana.” Gene Maitlen said.

“China is trying to work through the World Trade Organization to take advantage of their help so that projects like these will run more smoothly.”  Wang sand.  Yuan added, “It gives us a mutual understanding to further incorporate other dredging projects.”

Wang’s company, Shanghai Hushou Shipping Engineering Company, is the second largest shipping company in China.

It has been in operation for 70 years.  Through the interpreter he said they have equipment for tunneling through mountains that can move 100,000 tons of earth.

They export to Greece, Italy, Chili, Australia and other countries.

“Their machines are mammoths, but they need something smaller for the area in which they are now working.  That’s where we come in,” Gene Maitlen said.

“We want to purchase the products made by VMI because there is a growing demand for it.  We are importing the machines to clean up flooding rivers.  We hope this project will help improve levels of the environment-irrigation, and agriculture will be encouraged,” Wang said.

“We have talked to this group for a very long time, before arrangements could be made for them to actually come here and meet with us.  We took them out to eat to Freddies Steak House, and brought in Josh and Christine Williamson and Brandon Gibbs to perform Native American dance for them.

There was a photo session beneath a banner the group from China brought with them.

Testing in Real Conditions: Dredge Testing at VMI’s Facility Pond

Testing in Real Conditions: Dredge Testing at VMI’s Facility Pond

VMI Dredges Logo

At VMI Dredges, we believe that nothing tests a dredge quite like the real thing. That’s why, before a dredge leaves our facility, it undergoes comprehensive testing at our on-site pond. This controlled, yet authentic, environment allows us to evaluate each dredge’s performance in real-world conditions, ensuring that every machine we deliver is ready for the challenges it will face on the job. Our facility pond testing is where engineering meets real-world demands, giving us and our clients confidence that each dredge will operate efficiently, reliably, and safely in its intended environment.

Real Conditions, Real Performance

Testing at our facility pond goes beyond bench tests and simulations. Here, our dredges operate in conditions that closely mirror those found in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. This on-site testing allows us to assess the dredge’s pumping power, cutting efficiency, hydraulic stability, and overall control in a realistic setting. It’s a chance for us to see how each system functions in water, with sediment, and under the forces the dredge will encounter in actual field conditions.

By putting our dredges in the water before delivery, we gain critical insights into how each machine performs, fine-tuning adjustments to ensure maximum productivity and minimal downtime for our clients.

Testing Dredge Power and Efficiency

One of the main focuses of pond testing is evaluating the power and efficiency of our dredges in real dredging situations. In the pond, we simulate material removal, testing the dredge’s ability to move sediment, its pumping efficiency, and the power of its cutter or auger head. This is especially crucial for our clients who operate in high-sediment environments and rely on powerful dredging equipment to keep projects moving smoothly.

During these tests, we examine pump performance, monitor flow rates, and measure sediment transfer to ensure the dredge operates at optimal capacity. This allows us to guarantee that each dredge meets our high standards for efficiency, giving our clients the performance they need for demanding applications.

Precision Control and Maneuverability

Dredging often requires precision, whether it’s in narrow channels or delicate areas. Our facility pond testing gives us a valuable opportunity to evaluate each dredge’s control systems, verifying that it can maneuver accurately and respond smoothly to operator inputs. We test joystick controls, monitor hydraulic responses, and assess stability to ensure that each dredge handles with precision.

Testing in a pond environment allows us to identify and fine-tune any adjustments, optimizing control systems for different types of operators and projects. This focus on precision ensures that our dredges are easy to handle and operate with confidence, whether the job requires intricate maneuvering or straightforward sediment removal.

Hydraulic System Testing Under Load

Hydraulics are the core of a dredge’s performance, powering everything from the dredge pump to the cutter head. Our on-site pond testing puts the hydraulic system to the test under real load conditions. By observing how the hydraulic system performs in water with sediment and varying pressure levels, we can verify that it is running efficiently and smoothly.

This testing helps us ensure that our hydraulics will hold up under the pressures of demanding dredging projects, providing consistent power and durability. Any necessary adjustments to hydraulic flow or pressure are made on-site, ensuring that every dredge is operating with optimal power and reliability before it leaves our facility.

Durability Testing in Real-World Conditions

The pond environment provides the final durability test in a real setting. In the pond, our dredges encounter the wear and tear that comes from actual dredging work—abrasive sediment, the resistance of water, and the impact of working with heavy materials. This lets us observe how each component holds up under real-world conditions, from the hull and frame to the auger and cutter head.

We use this testing to make any necessary reinforcements or adjustments, ensuring that every VMI dredge is built to last and ready for rugged use.

Safety Testing in Real Conditions

The safety of our equipment is paramount, and pond testing gives us a unique opportunity to test all safety systems in an authentic dredging environment. Emergency shut-offs, safety barriers, and operator controls are carefully examined to ensure that each system functions flawlessly.

This commitment to safety testing in real conditions gives our clients peace of mind, knowing that their VMI dredge is built not only for performance but also for safety, protecting both the operators and the environment in which they work.

Fine-Tuning for Client Specifications

Every dredging project is unique, and our pond testing allows us to fine-tune each dredge to meet specific client needs. Whether it’s adjusting the dredge for specific depths, altering flow rates, or optimizing fuel efficiency, we can make modifications directly in the pond. This customization ensures that each VMI dredge performs exactly as our clients expect, ready to handle the specific demands of their job sites.

Confidence in Every Dredge We Deliver

At VMI Dredges, we don’t just test for functionality—we test for excellence. By evaluating every dredge in our facility pond, we guarantee that each machine is thoroughly vetted in real conditions. This rigorous process gives us confidence that when our clients receive their VMI dredge, they’re getting a machine that’s ready to tackle their project with precision, power, and reliability.

For us, pond testing isn’t just a quality assurance step; it’s a commitment to our clients and to the integrity of our brand. When a dredge leaves our facility, it’s more than a product—it’s a promise of performance, built and tested by the experts at VMI Dredges.

Way Back When Article November 16, 1989 - VMI is "Going Great" Here

 VMI is "going great" here

By Joe Shimko, Cushing Daily Citizen
Thursday, November 16, 1989

With the ever growing awareness of the environment both nationally and internationally, firms dealing with that issue are benefitting.  VMI, on of the newest firms in Cushing, has felt the increased concern about the cleaning up of the environment.

"We're going great," said VMI owner Gene Maitlen.

He indicated the cirm, which builds dredges, has "more orders now since we moved here."  That doesn't necessarily relate directly to their presence here, but factors such as numerous "clean water acts" being enforced in the United States and overseas have meant more activity such as the cleaning up of waterways.

This has meant more work than ever before for the 15 employees at the firm's site at 1125 N. Fleetwood.  If the steady stream of work continues, Maitlen expects to see more employees hired, to possibly 20 in the future.

VMI, which had its plans for coming to Cushing announced in 1988, saw construction on its two buildings started in April of last year.  By August, the company was ready to start with production commencing in October.

Recently Maitlen and others in the company were pleased when the first dredge, built entirely in Cushing, was sold to the City of Harrisonville, Kansas.

The dredge, which was viewed and climbed by citizens who attended an open house-ribbon cutting for VMI Tuesday, is the MDE415-HS.  The efficiency of both the company and president of the firm are symbolized by the newest piece of equipment.

Ribbon cutting at the Open House held at VMI while they and other local chamber officials stand on top of the first ever dredge built at the new company.

GENE MAITLEN (fourth from left) and his wife Peggy cut the ribbon at the Open House held at VMI while they and other local chamber officials stand on top of the first ever dredge built at the new company. (Staff Photo)

Recalling an Andy Rooney television commentary on the many items that are given names or identities without any significance, Maitlen outlined what each letter and number means.

"The 'M' stands for mini-dredge and the 'E' for the economy," said the owner.

The numbers also have meaning to VMI and its potential customers.

"The 'f' stands for a four-inch pump that can go 15 feet deep which the '15' stands for," he added.

the 'H' and the 'S' are also significant standing for hydro solids.
